Growing and Changing

Overview:
In this lesson we will discuss how the students have grown and changed since birth. Parents will be asked in advance to bring in 5 photos of each child from different stages of development; birth, age 1, age 2, age 3, current. The students will be shown the age 1 photos and as a group, be asked to guess which classmate is in each photo. We will then discuss how we have changed since the age 1 photo; eg. I am taller, my hair is longer, I am bigger, etc. The children will then be given all of their own photos and arrange them using ordinal numbers. Finally each student will create an art project using the photos highlighting how they have changed over time.
Introduction of the Lesson:
1. At least one week in advance, ask the parents to prepare 5 photos of their child to be used in a piece of artwork. The photos need to clearly show their face and be taken at different development stages of life; birth, age 1, age 2, age 3, and a current photo.
2. Begin the lesson by asking the children what happens as they grow up? What changes do people go through? This step of the lesson will engage the children by making them think about what is happening in their own life.
3. Play an engaging guessing game to see if they can identify their classmates as infants. Scan all age 1 photos into a digital format to be displayed on the IWB. Ask the children to guess which of their classmates is pictured! Once the class has guessed correctly, have each child discuss how they have changed since that photo was taken. Ex. I am taller. My hair is longer. Etc.
4. Give the children all of their own photos and have them arrange them in order and describe the process using ordinal numbers.
5. Allow each child to create an original work of art using the photos highlighting how they have changed over time. Have several examples displayed that the children can use as inspiration.
Assessment:
The children will be able to organize their photos chronologically and create an original piece of art work to share with the class.
